Medicare Advantage, in plain English

The basics, without the sales pitch.

What it is

A Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan is offered by a private insurer and takes the place of Original Medicare for your day-to-day coverage. You still have Medicare — you're choosing to receive it through the plan.

What it can include

Many Advantage plans bundle prescription drug coverage and may add extras like dental, vision or hearing. What's included varies by plan and by county, so the details matter.

What to watch for

Advantage plans use provider networks and have an annual out-of-pocket maximum. Check that your doctors and prescriptions are covered before you enroll — this is where a side-by-side comparison helps most.

How to compare

The best plan depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, and how you like to get care. A licensed agent can line up the options available to you and explain the trade-offs.

Advantage isn't automatically better or worse than Original Medicare with a Supplement — it depends on your situation. We do not offer every plan available in your area, but a licensed agent can compare the plans we do offer.

Medicare Advantage questions

What's the difference between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare?

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) is the federal program; you can pair it with a standalone Part D drug plan and a Medigap supplement. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is a private plan that delivers your Medicare coverage instead, often bundling drugs and extras but using a network. Neither is automatically better — it depends on your needs.

Will my doctor and prescriptions be covered?

That depends on the specific plan's network and drug formulary, which vary by plan and county. Checking this before you enroll is exactly the kind of thing a licensed agent can do with you for free.

When can I enroll in or change an Advantage plan?

The main windows for new enrollment are your Initial Enrollment Period around age 65 and the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7). If you're already in a Medicare Advantage plan, the Jan 1 – Mar 31 Open Enrollment Period lets you switch Advantage plans or move back to Original Medicare. Special circumstances can open other windows. An agent can confirm what applies to you.

Are you part of Medicare or a specific insurance company?

No. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by Medicare or any government agency. We do not offer every plan available in your area. For the complete list of options you can contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE.
